School 33 Art Center
Studio Artists Exhibition
07/09/2009 - 08/01/2009
www.school33.org

This building-wide group exhibition highlights the work of current Studio Artists during their tenor at School 33 Art Center. Since 1979, the Studio Artist Program has provided exceptional studio space at subsidized rates to more than 120 professional artists. In 2008, School 33 established the Studio Mentoring Program, which facilitates studio critiques and professional development for our resident artists. By inviting prominent artists and arts professionals from the mid-Atlantic region to conduct one-on-one studio visits, our goal is to provide support and constructive feedback in helping artists fulfill their creative path. The 2009 Studio Artists Exhibition is the culmination of the Mentoring Program’s inaugural year. Guest Mentors have included Jayme McLellan, founding director of the Civilian Art Projects in Washington, D.C.; Tony Shore, artist and 2007 Sondheim Artscape Prize recipient; and Doreen Bolger, executive director of The Baltimore Museum of Art. Ms. Bolger has also written a catalogue essay in conjunction with the Studio Artists Exhibition.

School 33 Art Center was established in 1979 as a neighborhood art center for contemporary art in the South Baltimore area of Baltimore City. Formally known as P.S. 33, the architecturally engaging brick and brownstone building built in 1980, was utilized as an elementary school until 1975 when a new facility was built for neighborhood children a few blocks away. The vacant and vandalized building bought action from the South Baltimore Community Committee which requested that Mayor William Donald Schaefer revitalize this unused facility. Based on the success of Long Island City’s P.S. 1 in New York and the strong national presence of alternative space programs in the late seventies, Mayor Schaefer proposed a similar program for Baltimore, thus creating School 33 Art Center.

As this building represented a significant component of Baltimore’s architectural heritage, its renovation exemplified the City’s belief in the revitalization of unused urban resources. The renovations were made possible with federal funds from the United States Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration and through the City’s Public Works Improvement Program.

After an extensive two-year restoration to allow for the creation of adequate gallery, studio and classroom space, School 33 opened its doors in July 1979, becoming Baltimore’s original alternative space for contemporary art. Its program offerings included one gallery exhibition space, studio facilities for professional artists, and classrooms for ceramics and printmaking workshops.

Since that time, in addition its studio program and services for artists, School 33 has expanded its exhibition, educational and special events programming. Highlights over the past 21 years include eighteen annual exhibitions in three gallery spaces; an extensive outreach program to South Baltimore neighborhood city schools; and the creation of the annual Open Studio Tour. These augmented programs were developed as a direct response to needs expressed by the public and art community.

2008-2009 Between East and West Exhibition (extended) and Salon Series -- Closing Reception, Friday, July 17, 6-8 pm

Bearing the name of its 2008-2009 theme, Between East and West, Millennium Arts Salon presents a group exhibition featuring artists living and/or working in the US and abroad - in Europe and Asia, opening Saturday, March 28, 2009.

The artists include Rachelle Puryear (Stockholm, Sweden), Billy Colbert (Washington, DC), Bill Dallas (Oakland, California), Ann Bouie (Washington, DC), Bryan McFarlane (Boston, Massachusetts and Beijing, China), Sheila Crider (Washington, DC), Alonzo Davis (Baltimore, Maryland), Paul So (native of Hong Kong, lives in Washington, DC), and Barbara Blanco (Annapolis, Maryland).

Curated by Barbara Blanco, assisted by Janell Blackmon and L'Rai Arthur-Mensah, works in the exhibition hint of artists' influences beyond the East and West borders of the US -- for example, Ann Bouie and African beads; Alonzo Davis and Sheila Crider who both did residencies in China and Japan respectively, Paul So's native Honk Kong and urban U.S. experiences, Jamaican-born Bryan McFarlane, living in Boston with a studio in Beijing, Washington DC-born Rachelle Puryear and the natural terrain of Sweden, to give a few examples. Between East and West in some ways parallels The Third Mind: American Artists Contemplate Asia, 1860-1989, exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, which highlights American Artists and Asian influences. But it by no means stops there, as Billy Colbert's figurative depiction of urban life in Washington and Baltimore and Bill Dallas's colorful and complex abstractions attest.

Please join us for the closing reception, Friday, July 17, 2009, 6-8 pm. There will be screenings and photograph presentations of MAS 2008-9 programs on the 2nd floor media room."

The exhibition frames the MAS 2008-2009 program season Between East and West, referring not only to the east and west borders of the continental US, but extending further east and west to Europe and Asia. This event is FREE and open to the public.

The show highlights line as language, and line as art.
The centerpiece of three illustrated poems represents a nearly spontaneous collaboration by writer Kay Weeks, who lives in Historic Ellicott City, and Brooklyn, New York artist, Hiroshi Kimura. With the exception of Mr. Kimura, the artists featured are women. They live in Catonsville, Columbia, Ellicott City, Washington DC, New York, and Seattle and include Denee Barr, Rachel Coleman, Kim Parr, Rebecca Weber, Margaret Scott, Roxie Munro, Doreen Starling, Lora Robertson, Kathy Taylor, and Virginia Bates.

Still another form of the line comes into play here: the timeline. The artists range in age from the 30s to the 80s with several stops in between, so the individual and collective experience is rich and varied. The connective tissue is spirit, honesty, power, and openness. Come expecting to be fully engaged.

HOWARD COUNTY CENTER FOR THE ARTS FEATURES TWO NEW EXHIBITS TEXTURE AND NO BOUNDARIES

Ellicott City, MD – Two new exhibits will be on view at the Howard County Arts Council galleries beginning Monday, July 3, 2009. TEXTURE, in Gallery I, features works handmade from paper and paper pulp and No Boundaries, in Gallery II, features work by youth and adults with developmental disabilities.

TEXTURE, in Gallery I, welcomes artwork created with handmade paper or paper pulp. The medium is certainly the message in many of these pieces where the texture of the paper or paper pulp is an aesthetic factor in the overall work of art. The pieces range from prints to pulp paintings to sculpture and the work has tactile and corporeal qualities. The artists featured in this exhibit include Shannon Brock, Georgia Deal, Ellen Hill, Nnenna Okore and Gretchen Schermerhorn.

Gallery II provides a venue for the display and viewing of artwork created by persons with disabilities. The No Boundaries exhibit features pieces which were created in art classes run by the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, the goal of these programs is to provide an opportunity for individuals with varying degrees of developmental disability to participate in an art class designed for self-expression, independence and relaxation.

There will be an exhibit reception July 22, 6-8 p.m., and an Open Mic Night beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby of HCAC. Guests interested in performing in the Open Mic show should contact Wendy Meetze at deputydirector@hocoarts.org or sign-up to perform at the door. A ‘People’s Choice’ award will be chosen by the Open Mic audience. The reception is free and open to the public.

TEXTURE and No Boundaries will be on display through Friday, August 14, 2009. The gallery hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and Sunday 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. To learn more about these and other HCAC programs call 410-313-ARTS (2787).

Keep checking back....more great work from many visual, literary, and performing artists appearing on the Baker Artist Awards website!

WELCOME to the Baker Artist Awards

Artists are invited to nominate themselves for the 2008 Baker Artist Awards consisting of the privately juried Mary Sawyers Baker Prize and the voter selected Baltimore's Choice. The process is designed to open the nominations to the broadest possible community participation using the Web. The William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund intends the Baker Artist Awards website to be an ongoing exhibition, archive and definitive statement about Baltimore as a creative richness and vitality as place to live and community that values its individual artists.

MARY SAWYERS BAKER PRIZE

Mary Sawyers Baker established the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund in 1964 to honor her husband. In 2008, the William G Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund Trustees honor Mary Sawyers Baker for her long involvement with and devotion to the arts. Mary Sawyers Baker studied voice as a young girl in Paris, embraced her love of travel for travel and the arts throughout her life until settling into her role as one of Baltimore's early philanthropists. A significant prize to individual artists of any discipline, emerging and established artists in a given year, with no strings attached, is a statement with meaning. Mary Sawyers Baker knew that it is the artists who give institutions purpose. Up to three individual artists could be awarded the $20,000 prize. Jurors for the Mary Sawyers Baker Prize will consider the top finalists selected by voters in Baltimore's Choice.

BALTIMORE'S CHOICE

Baltimore's Choice is an opportunity for the general public to vote and show their appreciation for the artists' work presented on the site. The more involved a member of the public becomes in exploring the various artists' projects on the site, then more votes can be earned and more votes cast. Votes can be cast for several artists and votes can be changed up until the deadline. Voting begins on November 1st and the prize or prizes will be awarded in March, 2009. Baltimore's Choice will award $5000 to artists from among the most popular selected by voters. Artists who receive the most votes in Baltimore's Choice will be among the artists considered for the Mary Sawyers Baker Prize.

Ellicott City, MD – Art MD 2008 is open at the Howard County Center for the Arts in Ellicott City. The Howard County Arts Council’s biennial juried exhibit features works by 48 artists residing in Maryland or surrounding regions within a 100-mile radius of the Center’s location in Ellicott City.

Juror Dr. Lesley King-Hammond, Graduate Dean, Emeritus, Director Center for Race and Culture at Maryland Institute College of Art selected works from approximately 360 images submitted by 132 artists. Selected artists include: James Adkins, Joan Bevelaqua, Bruce Blum, Nicole Buckingham, Winnie Coggins, Aline Feldman, Nancy Linden, Diana Marta, Chad Marth, Heidi Praff, Ron van Delden, Sarah Wegner, and Stan Wenocur.

ART MD 2008 is the eighteenth multi-media statewide juried exhibit sponsored by the Howard County Arts Council. The exhibit began in 1984 as Maryland’s Best, which was an annual show through 1989 open to all Maryland artists. In 1990, when the show became a biennial, its name was changed to ART MD. Since the Baltimore Museum of Art ended its Maryland biennial exhibits in the early 1990s, ART MD has been a premier juried showcase for artists in the region. In 2000, ART MD expanded to include Delaware and Southeastern Pennsylvania in addition to Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C.

An exhibit reception will be held at the Center in conjunction with the Howard County Arts Council’s Annual Open House and Holiday Sale on the evening of December 5 from 6-8PM. ART MD 2008

Applications are now available for ART MD 2008 through September 2, 2008. This is a biennial juried exhbit, which features pieces from artists, 18 years or older, residing in Maryland or within 100-mile radius of the Howard County Arts Council. Artists can submit up to three works. Guest juror Dr. Leslie King-Hammond, Ph.D., Graduate Dean Emeritus, Director of the Center for Race and Culture, Maryland Institute of ART, will select work to be exhbited October 31 to December 12, 2008.

The exhibits program at the Howard County Center for the Arts was established to enhance the public's appreciation of the visual arts, to provide a professional venue to exhibit the work of local and regional artists, and to provide leadership in the arts by presenting a broad spectrum of visual arts in all media, both traditional and contemporary. Exhibits are free and open to the public. The program showcases the work of local, regional and national artists - emerging and established - working in all media.

Eight to ten exhibits are presented annually. Artists and curators interested in having their work presented are asked to submit images and proposals for consideration. Exhibits are selected and presented in the context of multi-disciplinary, thematic, juried and invitational exhibits. This broad curatorial approach ensures that the program presents diverse artistic viewpoints while meeting the needs of the community.

Millennium Arts Salon opens its 2008-2009 season with A Conversation with Mary Anne Rose about “Gentry and Friends”, Saturday, September 13, 6-8pm at Millennium Arts Salon, 1213 Girard St NW, Washington, DC.

Millennium Arts Salon’s series, It’s All About Art, continues, this year with the theme “Between East and West”, referring not only to the east and west borders of the continental US, but extending further east and west to Europe and Asia. As in the past, It’s All About Art will encompass a focus on visual and performing arts and arts and letters.

MAS is pleased to kick off its new season with this exciting and important salon. Herbert Gentry’s influence as an artist crosses many borders. Gentry was born and raised in Harlem, NY, where he became grounded in the rich cultural influences of the Harlem Renaissance. He enriched his artistic prowess through his explorations in Paris, Copenhagen, and Stockholm, settling during the 2nd half of his life to a dual habitation in New York City and Malmo, Sweden. As Parish Gallery noted, “Gentry’s friendships illuminate his movement through the world; they were part of his rich experiences.” Enjoy this magnificent exhibit of Gentry’s work surrounded by his friends, many giants in the contemporary art world (Romare Bearden, Ed Clark, Beauford Delaney, Bill Hutson, Lois Mailou Jones, Richard Mayhew, Sam Middleton, Rachelle Puryear, and Vincent Smith, to name a few) at Parish Gallery extended through September 13. Then join us at Millennium Arts Salon the evening of September 13 for an intimate conversation with artist Mary Anne Rose, Gentry’s wife and confidant for over 25 years. Mary Anne’s salon will include slides of some of the works on view in the Parish exhibition as well as a book signing of the newly released Herbert Gentry: the Man, the Master, the Magic, published by G. R. N’Namdi Gallery.

This event is FREE and open to the public.
This event is jointly sponsored by Millennium Arts Salon and Parish Gallery

Exhibition: SHE’S SO ARTICULATE:
Black Women Artists Reclaim the Narrative

A show of work by emerging and established artists that challenges assumptions about black narrative-based art

Reception: Friday, June 13th, 6:00 – 9:00pm
Show Dates: June 10th – July 19th, 2008
Location: Arlington Arts Center, 3550 Wilson Blvd, Arlington VA
Metro: Orange Line: Virginia Square
Gallery hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 11 am – 5 pm
Contact: Jeffry Cudlin, Director of Exhibitions
jeffry.cudlin@arlingtonartscenter.org
703.248.6800 X 12

SHE’S SO ARTICULATE sets out to expand how gallery-goers think about the relation of narrative to contemporary art by African-American women. The show includes selected works and room-filling installations by 11 artists: Maya Freelon Asante, Renee Cox, Stephanie Dinkins, Djakarta, Nekisha Durrett, Torkwase Dyson, Faith Ringgold, Erika Ranee, Nadine Robinson, Renee Stout, and Lauren Woods.

Local collector and curator Henry Thaggert drew his inspiration for assembling these artists in part from the furor surrounding African-American artist Kara Walker—a MacArthur Foundation “Genius” grant winner who recently had a mid-career retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art. (Walker creates larger-than-life tableaus that refer to slave testimonials, historical novels and minstrelsy with caricatured silhouettes of antebellum slaves and their white masters.)

“She’s So Articulate” attempts to expand the discussion beyond Walker’s concerns about slavery’s traumatic impact on its victims. A series of bold photographs by Renee Cox strike a markedly different tone, depicting the artist’s super-heroine alter ego as she not only survives but thrives—and avenges subjugated brand icons Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben. Other artists use culturally cross-pollinated imagery and unconventional strategies for storytelling: Nekisha Durrett’s multi-paneled installation invokes manga-styled protagonists to tell a Japanese-inspired, supernatural fairy tale; lauren woods’s The Teenth of June combines footage of the crowning of the first African-American Miss Texas with a ‘70s sci-fi movie soundtrack to create an oddly tense vignette.

The exhibition features both traditional masterworks (such as story quilts and paintings inspired by African American history) as well as more novel new-media work (such as a Powerpoint presentation by Renee Stout). Sound-based art and videos toy with the conventions of storytelling in pop music and cinema.

The show is co-curated by local collector Henry L. Thaggert and Arlington Art Center’s Director of Exhibitions, Jeffry Cudlin. This is Thaggert’s second curatorial effort. In February 2008, Thaggert was one of six notable D.C. collectors invited to participate in Collectors Select at the AAC.

IN THE WYATT GALLERY:
Scott Hutchison and Evan Reed
New works by resident painter/new media artist Scott Hutchison and wood sculptor and Georgetown art professor Evan Reed will be on view.

IN THE JENKINS COMMUNITY GALLERY:
Flat Mates: Transformer’s Flat Files at Arlington Arts Center
Featuring selected unframed works on paper by emerging artists participating in Transformer’s Flat File program. Transformer is a Washington, DC non-profit contemporary arts organization: www.transformergallery.org

Founded in 1974, the AAC is dedicated to presenting and supporting new work of contemporary artists in the Mid-Atlantic States. Located in the historic Maury School building, it holds exhibitions, rents studio spaces, and conducts educational programs for all ages. Normal public hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. For more information, call 703.248.6800 or visit www.arlingtonartscenter.org.

Lida Moser Retrospective Exhibition Opens Today

Fraser Gallery
7700 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite E
Bethesda, Maryland 20814
(301) 718-9651
www.thefrasergallery.com

Opening on March 14, 2008 and through April 5, 2008, the Fraser Gallery in Bethesda will be hosting their second solo exhibition of legendary American photographer Lida Moser, who now lives in retirement in nearby Rockville, Maryland.

This almost 90-year-old photographer is not only one of the most respected American photographers of the 20th century, but also a pioneer in the field of photojournalism. Her photography has been in the middle of a revival and rediscovery of vintage photojournalism, and has sold as high as $4,000 at Christie's auctions and continues to be collected by both museums and private collectors worldwide. In a career spanning over 60 years, Moser has produced a body of works consisting of thousands of photographs and photographic assemblages that defy categorization and genre or label assignment.

Over the last 60 years, her work has encompassed photojournalism, portraiture, theatre, special effects, book covers, record covers, fashion and architectural photography. Her work is in the permanent collections of numerous museums, including the National Portrait Gallery, London, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC and Les Archives Nationales du Quebec in Canada.

This exhibition will include both vintage and lifetime prints, many of which are one of a kind.

Additionally, Canadian television recently finished filming a documentary about her life; the second in the last few years, and Moser’s work is now in the collection of many museums worldwide.

Lida was a well-known figure in the New York art scene of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, and a portrait of Lida Moser by American painter Alice Neel hangs in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York City. Neel painted a total of four Moser portraits over her lifetime, and one of them was included in the National Museum of Women in the Arts' "Alice Neel's Women" exhibition.

Among her body of works there are also loads of photographs of well-known artists and musicians that either hung around Lida's apartment in NYC or who were part of her circle of friends.

Lida Moser's photographic career started as a student and studio assistant in 1947 in Berenice Abbott's studio in New York City, where she became an active member of the New York Photo League. She then worked for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Look and many other magazines throughout the next few decades, and traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.

In 1950 Vogue, and (and subsequently Look magazine) assigned Lida Moser to carry out an illustrated report on Canada, from one ocean to another. When she arrived at the Windsor station in Montreal, in June of that same year, she met by chance, Paul Gouin, then a Cultural Advisor to Duplessis government. This chance meeting led Moser to change her all-Canada assignment for one centered around Quebec.

Armed with her camera and guided by the research done by the Abbot Felix-Antoine Savard, the folklorist Luc Lacourcière and accompanied by Paul Gouin, Lida Moser then discovers and photographs a traditional Quebec, which was still little touched by modern civilization and the coming urbanization of the region.

Decades later, a major exhibition of those photographs at the McCord Museum of Canadian History became the museum’s most popular exhibit ever.

She has also authored and been part of many books and publications on and about photography. She also wrote a series of "Camera View" articles on photography for The New York Times between 1974-81.

Her work has been exhibited in many museums worldwide and is in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London, the National Archives, Ottawa, the National Galleries of Scotland, National Portrait Gallery, Washington, DC, the Library of Congress, Les Archives Nationales du Quebec, Corcoran Gallery, Phillips Collection and many others.

Moser was an active member of the Photo League and the New York School.

The Photo League was the seminal birth of American documentary photography. It was a group that was at times at school, an association and even a social club. Disbanded in 1951, the League promoted photojournalism with an aesthetic consciousness that reaches street photography to this day.

An opening reception for Ms. Moser will be held on Friday, March 14, 2007 from 6-9PM as part of the Bethesda Art Walk. The reception is free and open to the public.

Everybody Loves a Great Story...............

Title: The Hunt
Artist: Kay Klotzbach

My dog paintings are about the quiet, mysterious and introspective part of me. Although the dog is the subject, the content of the work goes much deeper. Loneliness, taking a journey, dream-like states, longing, devotion, searching, abandonment and loss are touched on in these paintings. I am interested in showing and sharing images that are from unusual spatial vantage points and at times so real that they become surreal.

What do dogs dream about, what is that state that humans experience before sleep and waking up and are there parallels between these two worlds? How and why do dogs love us so completely? Where will my dog lead me today and where will my painting lead me? These questions are intertwined with my subject.

Jewel my first dog opened up another world for me as a person and an artist. Connecting with her took me to a different place where time stood still. Unfortunately, I could not stop time for her. She was diagnosed with lymphoma in July 2007 and the days that I share with her are all the more precious.

I work in the medium of photography and whether I translate my work via traditional darkroom or digital methods I have skill in the visual dynamic via any method conceived, captured and presented by me. Dark room chemistry vs. electronic chips their just tools. Makes no difference to me what tools I have available to work with for I decide the evolution of my artwork just like artists working in other mediums.

Note:

COLLECTOR'S CHOICE

Collector's Choice is the Maryland Federation of Art's most important and popular fundraiser. Once again Annapolis Subaru is our generous sponsor for the 31st annual event that's being held Sunday, October 28 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Annapolis Subaru, 149 Old Solomon's Island Road, Annapolis. www.annapolissubaru.com

In case you've never participated in Collector's Choice, as patron or donating artist, here's how it works. Member artists donate their treasured art works, which can be worth as much as $2000. These are featured in a preview at the Circle Gallery during the week before the event (October 19 through the 26th) to showcase the artwork and give ticket holders an opportunity to rank their choices and to tempt new collectors.

Each $160 ticket gives the ticket bearer and a guest an evening featuring a sumptuous buffet of fine food and drink donated by area chefs and restaurants, and best of all, the chance to take home your favorite artwork to add to your collection. After a chance to review and rank the artwork and enjoy the buffet-bar, the raffle begins.

It's a fast-paced evening as ticket numbers are randomly drawn and ticket holders claim their art choice. Those with numbers drawn first have the widest selection to choose from. As the number of available artworks shrinks, collector and artist alike get revved up, wondering who will be chosen next. It's an evening of fun and chance!

Why is this event so popular? For collectors, it's a great way to spend a Sunday evening enjoying good food and drink, and having the chance to take home a treasured work of art. For artists, there's a unique way to meet and connect with art collectors. Everybody wins!

Collectors: Call the Circle Gallery at once to order your tickets---410 268 4566.

Enriching, Enlightening, Engaging......that's how I would describe Howard County Poetry and Literary Society (HoCoPolitso) program Poetry & Nature: A Family Affair with Jane Hirshfield at the Howard County Conservancy on Sunday, October 7th. Ms. Hirshfield mesmorized the audience with readings from her award winning books including selections from her current 2006 publication After Jane Hirshfield Poems. And the children in attendance were treated to a nature walk around the Howard County Conservancy and they learned how to write Haiku, a form of Japanese poetry led by talented Columbia, Maryland writer Tim Singleton.

Good Day!

www.hcconservancy.org
Yesterday I took my family to the The Howard County Conservancy Fall Festival at Mount Pleasant Farm and we had a simply wonderful afternoon. What a delightful retreat!

Some of the activities that we enjoyed were making old-time crafts, blacksmithing, archeology dig, weaving, spinning, art show, and quiltmaking.

We were also present for the rededication and unveiling of the Montjoy Barn which is the last standing wheat barn in Maryland dating back to 1798. We were told that John Quincy Adams was President and Benjamin Banneker was surveying the land in Washington, DC when this barn was a working barn......oh my to be in the presence of such an historical structure. And, the barn is simply exquisite, masterful to behold.

Near the end of the festival, I purchased a very unique plant called "Lamb's Ear". I couldn't resist the purchase because the leaves actually feel like soft sheep wool. When I brought the plant home we talked about whether I should place the plant outside but then someone mentioned about the plant being a tasty meal for some of the rabbits that like to hop through our yard so I have decided to place the plant in a very large pot on our enclosed sun deck for now.

Everyday Counts...................Make the Day Great, Denee

The Howard County Conservancy at Mount Pleasant Farm

The Howard County Conservancy is Howard County’s largest land trust, founded by a group of local citizens in 1990 to help preserve the natural environment, agricultural farmland, and unique historic sites in Howard County. Headquartered at Mt. Pleasant Farm in Woodstock, Maryland, a 232-acre farm that is 300 years old, the Conservancy offers dozens of year-round educational programs for adults and children, hosts special events, and provides numerous volunteer opportunities, in addition to providing Howard County residents with information about land conservation. The Conservancy protects land by acquiring it through gift or by obtaining a conservation easement.

In 2005, with funding from the Gudelsky Family Foundation, the State of Maryland, and Howard County, the Conservancy built the Gudelsky Environmental Education Center at Mt. Pleasant. The Gudelsky Center is Howard County’s only nature center. Our educational programs are run out of the Gudelsky Center and it houses classrooms, meeting rooms, gallery space, exhibits and a gift shop.

Howard County, Maryland Honored With the 2007 National Award for County Arts Leadership

Washington, DC—July 16, 2007—Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts in America, in conjunction with the National Association of Counties (NACo) today presented the 2007 National Award for County Arts Leadership to the Howard County Government of Howard County, Maryland at NACo’s annual meeting in Richmond, Virginia.

The National Award for County Arts Leadership is part of a series of Public Leadership in the Arts Awards given annually by Americans for the Arts. The award honors an elected county board or individual leader who has significantly advanced the arts in the communities they serve. The Howard County Government was chosen for their dedication to supporting the arts in the area and incorporating culture into the county’s economic development plan.

Robert L. Lynch, president and CEO for Americans for the Arts, stated, “The work of the Howard County Government on behalf of the arts has helped make Howard County a national leader in promoting strong arts and cultural programs. They have exhibited exemplary leadership in the state of Maryland by dramatically increasing funds to the arts and cultural sector, while funds on the state level are declining.”

This year, under new administration led by County Executive Ken Ulman, the Howard County Government approved an 8.2 percent increase for the arts for FY 2008—increasing local public funding to $440,100—an all-time high. This appropriation also raises Howard County's per capita support of the arts to $1.63. Both Ulman and the County Council have publicly recognized the value of the arts and their impact on building stronger communities and increasing the quality and enjoyment of life in Howard County.

Only six months into his first year as Executive, Ulman is piloting an inter-agency community art program that will not only revitalize a non-descript public building located on the U.S. Route 1 corridor, but transform it into a gathering place and source of pride for the community.

“We believe in the transforming power of the arts, particularly when it comes to art in public places. This increase in the arts budget not only continues the legacy of public support for the arts in Howard County, but is a signal that the arts will be a priority in the new administration,” said Ulman.

Since 2000, the Howard County Government has consistently ranked as one of the top three counties in the state for per capita operating funds designated for the arts and has provided a stable source of funding and significant in-kind services for local arts groups.

Americans for the Arts established the National Award for County Arts Leadership in 1999 to recognize the positive role county government leaders play in improving arts programs, increasing funding to the arts, and making the arts accessible in their communities. Past recipients include: Douglas M. Duncan, County Executive in Montgomery County, Maryland; the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors; County Commissioner Park Helms of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina; County Commissioner Betty Lou Ward of Wake County, North Carolina; the Broward County Board of Commissioners of Broward County, Florida; the Jefferson County Commission of Jefferson County, Alabama; and the Lackawanna County Commissioners of Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania.

Americans for the Arts is the leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts in America. With offices in Washington, DC, and New York City, it has a record of 45 years of service. Americans for the Arts is dedicated to representing and serving local communities and creating opportunities for every American to participate in and appreciate all forms of the arts. Additional information is available at www.AmericansForTheArts.org.

NACo, the only national organization that represents county governments in the United States, continues to follow the traditions established by those early county officials. With its headquarters on Capitol Hill, NACo is a full-service organization that provides an extensive line of services including legislative, research, technical, and public affairs assistance, as well as enterprise services to its members. The association acts as a liaison with other levels of government, works to improve public understanding of counties, serves as a national advocate for counties, and provides them with resources to help them find innovative methods to meet the challenges they face. NACo is involved in a number of special projects that deal with such issues as the environment, sustainable communities, volunteerism and intergenerational studies. Additional information is available at www.naco.org.
